I finally did it!

I’ve been deliberating now for a while about doing a course in Interior Design. When I say ‘a while’ I mean about sixteen years! As I left high school and was considering what degree to choose, I deliberated about doing a degree in Interior Design, but after much back and forth I opted to study Management and specialized in Marketing. Promising myself, that one day I would certainly get back into design. Well thirteen years of a Marketing career later, and whilst I certainly get to exercise my creativity at work through overseeing advertising production and brochures etc. I still have a hunger for studying Interior Design.

I have always loved property and interiors, watching Changing Rooms and House Doctor on TV religiously, and applying what I’d learned to my own bedroom in my mum and dad’s house. To now when every weekend I spend hours in Home Goods, Hobby Lobby and antique stores choosing things to create my perfect little English country home away from home in the Minnesota woods.

I’m pleased to say I’ve finally taken the plunge! Two weeks ago I enrolled in the Diploma of Interior Design with the Interior Design Institute, CA (theinteriordesigninstitute.com). I’m really excited to be doing this course and seeing what i’ll learn.

The course is a six month study at home course and covers all elements of Interior Design from the basic principles and elements of design such as balance, harmony, color, textures etc. Right through to 3D space planning, choosing the correct lighting and furniture.

The course is divided up into 12 modules with 12 interactive assignments at the end of each one. I’m going to write about my journey through this course and how it helps me to further hone my creative skills to produce better, more harmonious room designs in the future. I’m currently working on assignment number one which looks at the elements and principles of design. Read more in my next blog – Elements and Principles of Design.
